Triumphal Arches

Triumhal/Monumental Arches were large, freestanding and heavily ornamented arches, which served no practical purpose, but were usually erected in honour of an Emperor, or to celebrate a military victory.

- Celebrating victory over the Parthians
- Inscription for the emperor and his sons
- One son killed the other and scratched out his name
Second arch of Septimius Severus
- Built at lepcis magna
- 4 way arch
- There is a replica at the imperial palace, Berlin
Arches of Trajan
- 1 in Rome
- 1 in Ancona, at the north coast of Italy
- 1 in Beneventum, in the south of Italy
- This has many realistic carvings
- It provided us with alot of knowledge about the Roman army and weapons
Arch of Constantine
- In Rome
- Triple Arch
- Celebrates victory over Maxentius
- Many sculpted scenes were looted from other arches
Arch of Timgad
- Triple Arch
- Replaced west gate
