Triumphal Arches

Triumhal/Monumental Arches were large, freestanding and heavily ornamented arches, which served no practical purpose, but were usually erected in honour of an Emperor, or to celebrate a military victory.

  • In the forum Romanum
  • One Arch
  • Semi-engaged columns
  • 3/4 columns of compocite order
  • Celebrates the taking of Jerusalem

Arch of Septimius Severus

  • At the top of the forum Romanum
  • Celebrating victory over the Parthians
  • Inscription for the emperor and his sons
  • One son killed the other and scratched out his name


Second arch of Septimius Severus

  • Built at lepcis magna
  • 4 way arch
  • There is a replica at the imperial palace, Berlin

Arches of Trajan

  • 1 in Rome
  • 1 in Ancona, at the north coast of Italy
  • 1 in Beneventum, in the south of Italy
    • This has many realistic carvings
    • It provided us with alot of knowledge about the Roman army and weapons

Arch of Constantine

  • In Rome
  • Triple Arch
  • Celebrates victory over Maxentius
  • Many sculpted scenes were looted from other arches

Arch of Timgad

  • Triple Arch
  • Replaced west gate
