Another poem I enjoyed was The Black Lace Fan My Mother gave me because it raises questions in my mind and keeps me intrigued. In the second and third verses of the poem boland uses an effect called stuccatto to create a dramatic atmosphere within the poem. This effect creates a sense of tension regarding whether the woman leaves or not.
- " she ordered a coffee. she stood up."
The contradictory expressions used to describe the fan create an unsettling atmosphere regarding the beautiful object
- " darkly picked, boldly stitched"
A similar unsettling description is used to convey the conventionally romantic setting o Paris. The city is described using the dull weather instead of the usual colours building people and landmarks usually liked with Paris. This created an uncomfortable tension within the poem.
- " It was Stifling"
The final image instantly recreates the image of the fan and the graceful parallels between the bird and the fan.
- " Suddenly she puts out her wing- the whole flirtatious span of it"
Boland Finishes the poem without answering any of the questions raised in i. Boland doesn't tell us who is the man or if he was her father but gives us a small insight into his personality
- " he was late"
this anonymity adds to the tension and suspense in the poem. She also leaves the reader wondering if her mother waited or left. the suspense helped me enjoy the poem and left me wanting more of Boland.
