What is Poverty?
Defined as: The condition of having little or no wealth.
People are described to be in poverty under the following circumstances when they:
- Do not have the resources or income to be able to have a standard of living, which is considered acceptable to the community
- They cannot participate fully in society due to the above factors
Those suffering in poverty have small resources which are so far below those of your average family that they tend to feel or be excluded from the normal daily life such as activities (sports groups, theatre groups etc), customs and general daily living patterns
Absolute Poverty A term used to describe situations in which people may not be able to physically survive because of the insufficient source of food, clothing and shelter.
Poverty Line Describes the estimated minimum income that will suffice to maintain the necessities of life
