Potential energy
Subject: Applied Mathematics & Physics
Level Ordinary & Honours

Potential energy is defined as the energy that a body has due to its position or state.

Examples of objects with a potential energy are a ball held in a person's arm at a height above the ground or a compressed spring.

[edit] Applications & Formulae

The potential energy of a body can be written as the following formula:

E_{p}\ =\ mgh

Where:

  • E_{p} is the potential energy of the body.
  • m is the mass of the body.
  • g is the acceleration due to gravity.
  • h the vertical height of the body above a certain point.
