Periodic Table and Atomic Structure

From ZuluNotes - Free Leaving Cert Notes

The sections on the periodic table and atomic structure are perhaps the most important on the syllabus. Chemistry can be defined as the study of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems. [1] A good grasp of these chapters of your textbook is needed for understanding much of the rest of the course. You should probably begin your studies with this topic, so as to lay the foundations for the remaining sections. There are five main areas to this topic: periodic table, atomic structure, radioactivity, electronic structure of atoms and oxidation and reduction. [2]

Students are expected to know:

  • Elements. Symbols of elements 1–36.
  • Trends in their physical and chemical properties.
  • The principal resemblances of elements within each main group, in particular alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens and noble gases.
  • Arranging elements in order of relative atomic mass; note differences compared with the modern periodic table.
  • Demonstration of the reaction with water of lithium, sodium and potassium.
  • The contribution of the various scientists throughout history.
