Laws of Motion

Isaac Newton's laws of motion are used in both Physics and Applied Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate. On the large scale, it is observed that all objects (particles) obey these laws, which are an important part of Classical Mechanics. The laws may be stated as follows:

1: A body will continue in a state of rest or of constant uniform velocity provided it is not impelled to change that state by an unbalanced external force applied to it.

2: The change in momentum with respect to time is proportional to the force applied, taking place along the same direction in which the force acts.

3: To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
