Momentum
Subject: Applied Mathematics & Physics
Level Ordinary & Honours

Momentum is defined as the product of the mass of an object and its velocity. It is refered to as Linear Momentum so as to distinguish it from Angular Momentum. It is a conserved quantity as defined by the Principle of Conservation of Momentum, ie in a closed system the total momentum is conserved.

Applications & Formulae

Momentum can be defined in the following formula:

P\ =\ m\vec v

Where:

  • P is the momemtum of the body.
  • m is the mass of the body.
  • \vec v is the velocity of the body.
