A cell division where 1 cell divides to form 4 cells, each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.
Functions
1) It is a mechanism of producing gametes with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, so at fertilisation the full complement is restored.
2) It is a means of producing changes in genotype leading to variation in the offspring.
