Homeostasis
From ZuluNotes - Free Leaving Cert Notes
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment.
It is necessary for animals in particular. Animal cells are bathed in tissue fluid, which produces an internal environment. Many factors or variables need to be kept constant if the cells are to flourish including:
- pH
- Concentration of Glucose
- Temperature
- Concentration of Carbon Dioxide
- Osmotic potential (achieved by controlling the concentration of the various salts in the blood)
