2009 - Paper I

[edit] The Exam

The exam consists of two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2

Paper one has a general theme on the front of the paper.

Three texts and one visual are contained in the paper, each based on this theme. Students must answer one Question A (50 marks) from one text and one Question B (50 marks) from another text.

There is then a Composing section worth 100 marks. There is a choice from eight essay titles from 5 different writing styles (persuasion, argument, narrative, aesthetic, information), all based on the general theme and texts on the paper. Candidates are expected to write roughly 3-4 A4 pages. You are free to refer to, quote from, or draw ideas from any or all of the texts and their accompanying pictures.


Recommended Time Allocation

Scanning through paper 10 minutes

Question A 40 minutes

Question B 45 minutes

Composition 1 hour 15 minutes

Checking over paper 5 minutes

Paper 2 is based on the different texts and peotry you have studied on the course. This includes:

Higher level:

  • Q1. Single text

There are two questions on the text that you have studied as your single text. Do one of these questions.

  • Q2. Comparative Course

Two out of the three modes of comparison are questioned here. Each mode has two questions, therefore giving a choice of four questions. Do one of these questions.

  • Q3. Poetry

The poetry contains both the unseen and prescribed poetry questions.

  1. Unseen poetry: This is a poem you have not studied. There are two questions given, do one of these.
  2. Prescribed poetry: These questions are based on the poetry you have studied on the course. There are four questions, each one on a different poet. Do one of these questions.
