Cell division is essential to all living organisms. It allows multicellular organisms to replace worn or damaged cells. It is the basis of reproduction in every organism.

Chromosomes (DNA + Protein) carry the genetic code in the nucleus from one generation to the next. In any one individual, it is vital that this code is copied faithfully from one generation to the next.
