The Blood

Blood is a human tissue and it is the transport or vascular system in mammals. An adult human has between 5-6 litres of blood.

Composition of blood

blood is made up of a liquid called plasma in which 3 types of blood cells are suspended;

1. Red Blood Cells (Erthrocytes)
2. White Blood Cells (Leuocytes)
3. Thrombocytes (blood platelets)

Plasma

Plasma is made up of:

• 90% water.
• plasma proteins which include antibodies and clotting proteins eg. fibrinogen.
• Dissolved materials which include:

1. products of digestion-glucose,amino acids,ect.
2. waste products such as carbon dioxide and urea
3. Oxygen.

Serum- blood plasma with the clotting proteins removed. Blood is stored in the blood banks as serum to prevent the blood from clotting.
