Archimedes Principle
Subject: Applied Mathematics & Physics
Level Ordinary & Honours

Archimedes Principle states that a body immersed partially or completely in a fluid experiences an upward force that is equal in magnitude to the weight of the fluid that is displaced by that body. This force is often referred to as buoyancy.

Applications & Formulae

The principle can be written as either of these following formulae:

F_{B}\ =\ mg or F_{B}\ =\ \rho Vg

Where:

  • F_{B} is the buoyant force experienced by the immersed body.
  • m is the mass of the displaced liquid.
  • g is the acceleration due to gravity.
  • \rho is the density of the displaced liquid.
  • V is the volume of the displaced liquid.
