Timeline for 1885-1886 Election

  • 1884: Gladstone’s Reform Act increases number of voters and re-draws the constituencies.
  • 1884-1885: Relations between Liberals and Home Rulers deteriorate over coercion. Parnell rejects Chamberlain’s Central Board idea. Irish Party work with the Conservatives.
  • 1 May 1885: Southern Unionists form Irish Loyal and Patriotic Union to resist Home Rule.
  • 9 June 1885: Gladstone defeated in the Commons by combined Conservative and Irish vote.
  • 23 June 1885: Salisbury becomes prime minister, with Parnell’s support. He appoints Carnarvon as Viceroy. He drops coercion and brings in Ashbourne Land Act.
  • 21 Nov 1885: Parnell urges Irish voters in Britain to support the Conservatives.
  • Nov-Dec 1885: General Election in Britain and Ireland.
  • 17 Dec 1885: Gladstone’s son reveals his father favors Home Rule ( The “Hawarden Kite”)
  • 25 Jan 1886: Unionist Party formed under leadership of Edward Saunderson.
  • 26 Jan 1886: Salisbury announces re-introduction of coercion.
  • 27 Jan 1886: Gladstone elected Prime Minister with the help of Home Rule Party.
  • 22 Feb 1886: Randolph Churchill’s “Ulster will fight” speech in Belfast.
  • 27 March 1886: Chamberlain resigns from Gladstone’s Cabinet over Home Rule.
  • 8 April 1886: Gladstone introduces his first Home Rule Bill.
  • 8 June 1886: Liberal Party splits on Home Rule. Bill defeated by 341 to 311. Gladstone calls another election.
  • 1-17 July 1886: The “Home Rule” election. Liberals defeated by Conservatives and Liberal Unionists. Salisbury is again Prime Minister.
